brief
Design a massive sensing application for a complex system. Using this application, people should be able to dig into the sensing data and, in an individual way, gain new perceptions and understandings of the system, and through this understanding, act in some different way that would not have been possible without the massive sensing.

Wallace Shawn - Is the World Really a Stage?

ideation
Might Have Been is a mediated experience that cues individuals the opportunity to reveal potential selves by a physical act. These experiences are triggered by sensors that exist within various environments and based on these environments, the individuals are given a prompt to carry out. These performative events are then archived and embedded into the space--giving these potential selves a place and existence. This system of sensors are made to create conversation about the illusion of the self and blur the rigidness of the categories that people are placed in. This project is about creating conversation on identity and the projection of self.

Wallace Shawn writes in his essay “Why I Call Myself a Socialist: Is the World Really a Stage?” that “we are not what we seem [..] we are more than what we seem.” Shawn makes the argument that hidden inside ourselves are multitudes that are not projected because of the constraints that we create or are put into. The actress in his view is a person who willingly reveals truths about themselves, “simply showing the audience what she might have been.” This project places individuals in the role of a performer, giving them freedom to show parts of themselves they normally struggle to hide.

brief
Create a variety of electronic perception enhancing devices to provoke a discussion about the possibilities – good, bad, and unknown – of different kinds of sensory augmentation. Each project must integrate at least two sensors to create a single perception. One sensor is local, and the other is a feed from a cloud service (e.g. ThingSpeak).

brief
Create a design proposal for a communication space at a threshold. Thresholds define where one place ends and one place begins and as such are rich sites for friction, transformation, hybridity, knowledge-sharing, and blurring of definitions. Create an intervention that ask a community, family or group of individuals to express their perspective around a subject or topic area.

research + investigation
The beginning of the project involved numerous visits to flea markets, talking to vendors and keeping track of each vendor's idiosyncratic value structures on how they priced their items.

These value structures gave us insight into tactics of selling, desperation, passivity, or boredom. We were interested in creating our own idiosyncratic value structure to reflect on our discoveries from these flea markets.

history injected objects
Many of the object we found at these markets had some story or event that went along with it. More than the object itself, the history became what the vendors were selling and by attaching an object to these events, they became narrative artifacts.

In our proposal, we brought together items from our homes that carried no sentimental value to us--things that were void of a story--and through various techniques we injected histories onto these unsentimental things.

brief
Our time, our environment, and our thinking are structured in numerous ways, by necessity, by choice, and sometimes against our will. What form and shape do these structures take and how do they work to define us and our relationship to the world? What makes a structure and who determines how it behaves, what kinds of relationships it creates or disallows? How would you structure a world of your own choosing? What happens when we turn these rules around the use them to generate rather than to contain?

With a collection of things, create a classification system that has a particular worldview.

experimenting
With this experiment, I was playing with classification systems that were irrational and had significant degrees of contingencies. I was interested in the idea of a system that could only be implemented for one specific moment--a one-time use system.

This experiment with my dog was a playful way to allow myself to explore this idea.

36 Goose Feathers fall to my desk at arms length with a window open | a collection of things

Going further with this classification system of irrationality and contingencies, I chose goose feathers as my collection of things because of the delicate and fragile nature. This system involved dropping these goose feathers from my arms length onto the table with the window open. I designed a situation that would have these specific rules but with an outcome that is difficult to measure and impossible to recreate.

short story
BEGINNING/Christmas in Munich, Franz plucked the feathers off. Empty follicles multiply on his lap and a pile of plumage sit by his feet. Another feather plucked and disposed. A sunbeam divides the space where it settles.

ENDING/The door opens and a wind pushes in. Franz turns his head up, feathers follow with a sweep. Each slowly descending once the wind has passed through. Forty-six feathers lay calm in the shed.

processing

In the processing sketch, I created an interaction that would involve an individual to click on a point to create patterns that are create by chance. This sketch was a way to mimic the interaction with dropping the feathers and allowing these contingencies to create the outcome.

charrette

For the charrette we were given a day to create a physical object that would be translate the aura of our data set. I created a mobile that had characteristics of a structured geometric outlook but also something organic that would throw off the balance of the mobile.

<img src="http://payload93.cargocollective.com/1/4/144315/4176425/IMG_2284_1.JPG" width="670" height="897" width_o="1000" height_o="1339" src_o="http://payload93.cargocollective.com/1/4/144315/4176425/IMG_2284_1_o.JPG" data-mid="24517648" border="0" align="left"/>

final

Moving forward with creating a mobile, I kept what I found to be initially interesting about this project. The feathers had a sense of futility in the attempt to measure them, and a passive acceptance to this situation. The final outcome was about creating something that would exist in some physical environment. My object was a monumental clock that would not measure time, but would be a visual point of reference for this fictional town to have with their environment.

brief
create a map of a suburban development that delivers a perspective that is beneath the surface of what is visible.

calabasas
Our interest in Calabasas stemmed from the lack of accessibility of the community. Our first visit involved a lot of stealthy tactics and being asked to leave on a number of occasions. Many of the spaces that were being used by the community had a sense of private-ness and that discovery lead us to the idea of camouflage. As a group we discussed what the implications of camouflage are and different motivations for a disguise.

calabasas itinerary
1. Calabasas Community Center
2. Wells Fargo Bank
3. Old Town Calabasas Farmer's Market
4. Coffee Bean
5. Chevron Food Mart/ Gas Station
6. Sagebrush Cantina
7. Edwards Grand Palace Stadium 6 Cinemas

For our second visit to the community we created an itinerary for person living in Calabasas based on the most frequently visited places found on Yelp. With this itinerary we collected language from each location by recording audio.

After collecting our data, we returned to the studio to transcribe all the audio. In the spirit of our camouflage idea, we researched audience murmur used in film and theater.

Audience murmur (from wikipedia): "Walla or Peas & Carrots in US rhubarb in the UK, rhabarber in Germany, rabarber in the Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium) as well as Sweden, and gaya in Japan, perhaps in part reflecting the varying textures of crowd noise in the different countries. Other phrases are "carrots and peas," "watermelon cantaloupe, watermelon cantaloupe" and "natter natter" (to which the response is "grommish grommish")."

In order to get this sense of each place, we ran the transcribed audio into a text analyzer that would distill the language into the most frequent combination of words. These became the murmurs for the Calabasas community.

Our final iteration was a map that was set up like a stage, allowing participants to walk through the space and rehearse these roles and disappear as a part of the crowd of this suburban community.

research + investigation
GET A DOLLAR - first iteration
<img src="http://payload93.cargocollective.com/1/4/144315/4176446/getdollar.png" width="670" height="305" width_o="2000" height_o="913" src_o="http://payload93.cargocollective.com/1/4/144315/4176446/getdollar_o.png" data-mid="22102708" border="0" align="left"/>
In this experiment, we were interested in creating a dispenser in which the willing participant would give us their earliest memory in exchange of a dollar. We modeled this experiment to be ambiguous to invite curiosity in the passerby. We were interested in placing value onto this aural exchange. After telling us their earliest memory, they ask -- "was that good enough?"

Site-Specific Collection of Memory//from childhood to adulthood - second iteration
In our second pass, we decided to keep the memory aspect, but further expand the interaction and significance of these memories. Instead of asking each individual for their earliest memory, we ask to give us a memory from a specific age--somewhere between childhood and adulthood. We gather these memories and create a whole. In this experiment, we went around with a recording device and asked people to give away these memories.
After implementing this idea, we found that potential to create a rich interaction between the participants and the act of signing a form.
